Hey guys
I was fortunate enough to receive an iPhone 4 for testing purposes (and I get to keep it, though I can't say I am sure tI want to at the moment).
Phone received through AT&T, set up in store .. now home to figure it out.
First of all .. with all the guides out there .. no guide on how to place and receive phone calls or answer them.
I read that two finger double tap will answer and terminate a phone call. I have gotten the answerring to work, no problem, but I cannot terminate a phone call with a double two finger tap, not at all, plus the phone kind of locks up so it takes me minutes of random tapping to end a phone call .. am I doing something fundamentally wrong here?
To set up VoiceOver you need to use ITunes, not usable with Jaws 11 at lesat (have heard NVDA is the king of screen readers with iTunes about to test it).
When you are going to write in your Apple ID, or your registration (name, city, country etc) Jaws will not work in edit morde inside the iTunes app so you can't type into the edit fields .. not so super accessible really.
I canot find a very beginner's guide to the iPhone for a blind user. The html page from Apple's Accessibility web site turns up a "404, page not found" error, which is not very professional.
So, anyone out there willing to give me pointers and avoid my switching back to my Noika n95 and giving the iPhone a failing grade?
What about importing contacts or adding them, what about bluetooth keyboard, any recommendations?
What about using the special iPhone screen cover from, I think, Salona, does it make a big difference?
Looking forward to feedback from the Apple fans in here .. here's your chance to convert me.
Cheers
-B
I don't use Jaws, but other people have told me that Jaws doesn't work well with iTunes. You might want to go with NVDA or Window Eyes. They both work well.
jaws with itunes is shite. however, once you have it initially set up you really don't have to bother much with itunes at all.
You can set up voiceover within the phone itself (or someone can do it for you). just get them to go to settings/general/accessibility/voiceover and set it to "on". After that set up three click voiceover within the same menu - this means that you can turn the voiceover on/off by pressing the home button three times.
Answering calls works well with the two finger double-tap, ending them can be more tricky. What I've found is that it's best to use the phone in conjunction with the hands-free headset and that way the speach works better while you're in a call (to be honest I use the headset anyway as I find the speach intrusive so god knows what the rest of the world must think of it).
Um, what else do you want to know?
I love my iphone and am practically surgically attached to it.
Good, I got my iPhone set up with sighted assistance, have to set up the iTunes/app store account too (which I will do tonight).
I am beginning to make headway with the typing (actually not bad, once you discover the split tap).
So can you answer and end calls using the hands free head set? (I still cannot, for the life of me, end calls with the double tap).
I have the issue that the phone's tilt will set it to speakerphone if tilted just a bit too much in one direction .. can that be eliminated via a setting or the hands free headset again?
Has anyone tried that special "accessible" iPhone cover from Salona? Does it just mark the areas at the top and bottom of the screen dedicated to the little status icons or whatever they are?
Anyone tried it with a bluetooth keyboard for emails/etc?
Anyone have an idea of what reasonable expected data usage might be for your typical browsing (no YouTube or downloads) in a month?
I have a 200mb package but keep the phone using wi-fi and connected to wireless networks whenever possible?
Any other tips/tricks/cool ideas?
I may be a programmer, and not a horribly bad one at that, but programmers are not necessarily the quickest to pick up on new technologies *grin*.
Cheers

if you want a lot of info on the IPhone you may want to look at blindCoolTech. even the podcasts related to the touch will help you somewhat as they are amost the same device
Good luck B. lol. I have the ipod touch and love it. Dan and I don't like i tunes though. I so wish it didn't have to be used. lmao! Typing on the touch i find easy, once you get use to it!
the flicking to the right and left to navigate is a big help when your still getting use to the lay out. After a while you'll kind of know where things are located. I did listen to some podcasts on blind coolteck. There are some helpful ones out there.
You'll have to keep us updated as to how you go with the i phone. I have been thinking of getting one. but am still not so sure yet. lol!
Itunes 10 with both jaws 11 and 12 is a great way for managing music on both your computer and device. I can't imagine using the basic programs such as winamp or Windows media player after using iTunes for the past 2 years! From creating, managing and burjning play lists to transfering to the iPhone it's a seemless process once you just come to grips with the screens layout!
I wouldn't even know where to start when it comes to something like WinAmp or Media Player. I've actually gotten used to ITunes. Granted I wouldn't know how accessible the ITunes Store is with Window-Eyes, not that I've had much need for that yet. But my wife and i being huge IPod users we may be asking for ITunes gift cards in our Christmas stockings from now on.
I don't think I need to rehash my opinions of touchscreens etc. But I am curious about something. After reading the first post, I wondered why on Earth do you need to use ITunes to activate VoiceOver? Wouldn't it make more sense to have it built into the phone and simply allow it to be activated with a key combination like command F5 on the Mac? After reading SugarBaby's post, it makes even less sense. It's built-in but not easily accessible to start for the first time? Headache! Same with the tilt. That sounds like a major design flaw, to have speaker phone turned on simply by tilting the phone. I'm sure even the sighted people have problems with that one. I avoid ITunes etc. at all costs. Better to just copy and paste my music files/folders.
Anyway, good luck with all of this. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. You might also want to join the Mac Visionaries list. They discuss the other Apple products too, not just Macs.
I suppose they didn't think of that. They could have just set it up so that hitting Home three times wold turn Voiceover on or off automatically right out of the box, so you wouldn't even have to use ITunes. I felt the same way about it before I actuallys tarted playing with it but I've gotten used to it since once you add the files you want to add to your device to your ITunes Library then all you have to do is connect it to the computer and Sync it, which is fairly easy to do and doesn't take that long. I do agree it'd be more convenient if you could just copy and paste it but I don't mind doing it the ITunes way anymore now that I've found out what works for me.
Well, it's been a few days now and some things are coming clearer.
Problems encounterred:
The current case covers up the proximity sensor of the phone so it switches constantly between speakerphone and normal mode during a call. If sensor is not covered (it should not be) screen is turned off and the random speakphone function disappears .. be careful when you purchase a case.
Still unable to end a call with a double tap of a finger, clearly does not work. I wish Apple had an extra button on the phone for these basic things, enter/start call/end call, I think it'd improve the phone enormously. Using the headset that comes free with the phone you get this functionality so you kind of have to use it most of the time. Drawback, definitely.
Pros: Amazingly fast at doing things that may seem complicated. For email, I chose GMail, enterred name, username, password, and clicked "next" and my email is synced to my iPhone, literally nothing else required.
I got Weather, Skype, msn, reader, need to get Daisy Player but VOD (Voice of Daisy) is becoming decent, and all sorts of little nerdy apps on the phone, work beautifully (have not tried instant chatting, typing is just too slow).
con: annoying to add contacts, typing is still slow, though with practice it'll get better.
pro: I have heard, and will test this, that with an external bluetooth keyboard you can really make this thing kick some butt, and you can easily sync it with a bluetooth braille display.
Updates again in a few days.
I like the touch screen technology, once used to it.
I've heard the power button when pressed once actually terminates a call.
Still haven't ventured down the Ipath.
I'm going to just as soon as finances permit. My wife and I talked about it and I'd much prefer to get a used 3GS rather than risk the problems with the antenna. I know people say that's a myth but I'd rather not take chances. I just know that my next new phone WILL be an IPhone since I'm no longer willing or indeed able to pay the extra price to install a separate, third-party screen reader whose voice I likely won't care for. I can't stand Eloquence and wouldn't use it at all on my computer if it weren't for the fast response rate and I've grown weary of Loquendo Susan over the past year or so. And if it's anything like the IPod Touch the IPhone will have Scansoft Karen on it, even though it would mean I'd actually have to change my language settings in order to use her. I did that with the IPod and so far haven't noticed any adverse effects. Then again I may go for the 4G if that's the one that'll let me use a Bluetooth keyboard for texting.
shoot BryanP22 its not the willingness to pay for upgrades for MSP, its third party apps support that is driving me away from MSP. I would say more about this topic but I already posted some where on ta topic kinda like this.
sorry I ment this not ta.
Wb, for typing what i'd honestly advise you do is
1. Use the roter to navigate to typing mode, and flick up or down to place the unit in touch typing mode ratherthan standard.
Note: this can only be done in surtain eddit fields when the keyboard is up, like messaging and email, it can't be done in spotlight.
Once you've got this feature on, you move/touch letters you want to type and lift your finger to type the letter. backspace still requires a double tap in some cases, and so does the button to toggle the keyboard state.
On many of the newer I OS devices, you just have to tripple tap home and the unit gives you the option of turning on zoom/voice over, and speaks this prompt.
Hmm, only other tips I can give are to master all the gestures and learn that roder.
As one with partial sight, I never have huge issues hanging up the call. For refference, the end button is at the bottem of the screan and runs horizontally, in the dialer view that has all the call controlls up, in the bottem left corner when you have the dialer screan withthe num pad. As you all think of more questions, drop me a line and i'll do my best to help.
I did try out a demo of Jaws on iTunes and it worked fine for me. But it was Jaws12, so I'm not sure that makes any difference there.
I love itunes but have a question about skype on the iphone. Is there a quick way to delete your history? When clicking it and hitting edit it seemms that I have to go through every one dleting it. That will take forever because I use skype there so much.
I think that their is a clear all button. B, I'd recommend you look at applevis.com. Great resource. To the person who said pressing the lock button will hang up a call, that is correct. I love my iphone, and wouldn't go back. Granted, if I did go back I'd have aphone with no speech, so... The bluetooth keyboards are a big help, and I'm thinking of getting one myself.
One other thing, I'm using jaws 10.0.1154 and itunes 10 and am having no problems with it. The store is a bit crazy, and registering in itunes is a pain on windows but not on the mac, but remember, you can always register on the iphone and voice over will work perfectly with it.
The Bluetooth keyboard is the main reason I'd want to get an IPhone 4. My wife and I did a little research on Tuesday afternoon on I believe apple.com and found a phone with a carrying case I like since it can apparently be worn on a belt. That's what I've been looking for. Anybody know of a decent bluetooth keyboard?
their's several out their, I'm actually looking in to one my self, so I can more easily write longer emails right on the device. If you get that case you shouldn't even have to worry about intenna issues, and that's honestly the root i'd take as the 4 has a bettercamera, processor, gps, and more ram than the 3gs if its possible. I know to many the camera doesn't seem emportant, but as barcode and other scanning apps continue to gain in features and popularity, you'll be more fully ready to take advantage of them.
Well we'll just have to see what happens. I'm not even sure when I'll be getting the phone. I just know that's what I plan on doing, and as soon as is financially feasible.
I'm not sure if he goes on here or not, but if you follow doug s on twitter, he's got some for $20. Christopher tauth (SP?) has one and seems to really like it.
yes especially if you've got a keyboard that is small enough that you can take with you places while you're waiting say in an airport or something. But i agree with blindndangerous, I wouldn't go back to any other phone. And now that I've successfully jailbroken my phone with 0 sighted help, I am happy. Using itunes and setting the phone up I have found is 10 times easier on the mac than windows, things just seem to flow easier on the mac side of things. If you have an incoming call and do not wish to receive it then pressing the lock sleep button will forward the call t your voicemail. I did not know about the 2 finger double tap to answer but I knew about it to end a call. But I do notice some inconsistancies, like when the incoming call screen pops up, voiceover doesn't always announce the same thing each time, but for e it is not a show stopper.
Sounds like it's gonna take some getting used to but it also soundslike it'll be so worth it.
I know a friend of mine has used the Freedom Pro keyboard successfully, instructions here:
http://blindaccessjournal.com/2010/06/pairing-the-iphone-4-with-the-freedom-pro-bluetooth-keyboard/
I have not bought one yet.
I still get speakerphone switching issues, even if I have removed th case from the phone, on the verge of taking it in for review, because this should not happen.
Also the power / sleep button, on my phone, does not end a call.
It is kind of funny that everything else works amazingly but actually placing and hanging up phone calls on the iPhone is substandard, may be there is something wrong with my handset, which is quite possible.
Everything else is working amazingly but I still stick to my opinion that they should make simply placing and receiving phone calls more intuitive and easier, the phone would benefit hugely from one small extra button dedicated to the default actions of each app, and I hope we'll see it in future.
Cheers

p.s. batterylife is very impressive, and this is the only phone I have had that tells you the percentage of battery left, which is nice, also charges quickly through USB.
Well my current pone gives percentages and whatnot but the way it does makes no sense. When you charge it and then leave it plugged into the charger the battery level gets up to 100%. The instant you unplug it however it drops all the way down to 80, then to 50 and then to 30 and finally 5. Like I said, it makes absolutely no sense. And this was the case with both phones of this particular model that I've owned (a Motorola q9H). And yes, the same is true of the supposedly extended battery that comes with the unit in addition to the regular battery.
One update to keyboard issues.
I just purchased the Menotek waterproof Bluetooth keyboard for iPhone, from $80 down to $30 on sale.
Will let you guys know how it pans out (will get it Tuesday from Amazon).
I've had inaccurate battery level indication in many devices. It seems to be a bit of an art but, as far as I can tell, iPhone gets it right.
i'm thinking of getting an iphone. is the 3 better than the 4 or? the other way around...
the 4 is superior to the 3gs and below.
alright, but why is it better? what is the difference between 3 and 4? in terms of features, usability of voice over, and what not
.
one has a 1 gig processer, opens apps faster, the camra is better and I will let others who have it tell you more.
Then of course Bluetooth keyboard support on the 4 for those who want it. I plan on getting a 4 for that purpose, that and if aps load faster. I don't foresee using many aps really but that doesn't mean I won't find ones I like and decide to install them. Just trying to keep an open mind. And if the carrying case will protect from any antenna problems it'd still be worth it.
I too am thinking of getting the iphone, just wondering how easy it is to get used to. i looked in the apple store, at the touch, it seems insanely dificult. However, i love the sound of it, plus i don't really feel like paying another £150/200 for talx or any other speech software, that ahd voiceover is amazing
to the previous person I was freaked when buying my iphone but loved what it could do. I looked at a touch in the store to and was like oh no can never figure this out ha. When I got my phone though I loved it instantly. Just get it. You will love it.
voiceover as a hole runs quite alot better on the 4 aswell.
Faster processor, extra camera on the front, flash, an extra 256 megs of ram. Let us know how the keyboard works out, and also is it a full sized one?
I'd be curious about that too. I'd like to have some ideas what best to look for when I do get my IPhone. Hopefully that'll be within the next few months.
i love my touch. but sooo don't like i tunes. lol. maybe just cause 'm not use to it. but it sucks. I have a recent problem. We went to Australia and i somehow don't remember how i did it changed my time to sydney. which was good. but now I'm home i changed it back to chicago. Now the time is waay wrong and the date even more so. lol it's something stupid like 1970. I thought just sinking my touch to my computer would work, but yeah, not so much. Any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong. i also tried to change it in the date and time setting. yeah, well it don't work well. i can't get it to change. and now when i go to connect to the ap store, it says unable to connect, check date and time. lol what the.... help. lmao!
hmmm, never mind, I finally got it to work. it was just acting stupid, id. it finally let me go to settings and change the time. before i went there and it wouldn't do anything. lol.
FOr those having trouble with the 2 finger double tap to answer and end calls try putting some space between your fingers and make sure both are hitting the screen. The first 2 days with the device is gonna be the most painful, but as soon as you learn to flick left to right instead of dragging your finger all over the screen trying to find stuff it becomes a lot easier to use. And the best part is voice over is really responsive (especially on the iPhone 4 with the faster hardware) it will keep up with you as quickly as you can navigate the phone. In Fact i can navigate my iPhone faster than i can older phones with buttons and their screen reader. I say get the 4 getting a 3GS at this pointis doing yourself a disservice at this point. the 4 has a better camera which can be used for OCR, Bar Code Scanning, Money Identifier and Magnifier, among other purposed besides taking pictures. Updated bluetooth chip and gps chip Wireless N instead of wireless G, and a faster processor and Ram so every thing runs Snappy on it. Oh and do a search for mini bluetooth keyboard on ebay or amazon if you are looking for a small pocket sized bluetooth keyboard for the phone Cuz it's really the same keyboard repackaged or rebranded for around $20 give or take out of china, and it will be like having a detachable slide out QWERTY keyboard for your iPhone. That reminds me i need to order one.
oh and by the way for the love of god it's the iPhone 4 ... Not 4G ..#justsaying
I have had very good luck with my iPhone 3GS. I have never had difficulty placing a call, though very occasionally the two finger double tap to end a call does not work and I must locate the End Call button, which in itself is very easy. I have nothing but praise for this device and for the strides Apple has made in making mainstream phones accessible to us right out of the box.
Not only is VoiceOver more responsive on the iPhone 4, but it also sounds clearer. I'm not really a fan of Samantha, which is the speech synth that's used, but it works for now, I guess. Sure would be cool to have Alex on there, but the processor isn't powerful enough for that yet.
s verizon is getting the iphone ha
So, no one has had issues with the speakerphone flickering on and off during a call?
I did manage to use the sleep button, press it very quickly, to end calls, so that is falling into place, the only issue I still have is I have to be super careful how I tilt the phone to avoid it going back and forth between phone and speakerphone, and that makes it difficult to use.
I know I could use a headset but I don't want to always have to do that.
Cheers

i may be going IPhone 4 soon for my cell phone so that has me quite happy. i've been trying to find out what apps allow use of the camera, like for barcodes OCR and the like. any help would be wonderful
There's not really a good OCR app out yet. Say text is the only one out, but it doesn't work very well.
Code Reader works nicely.
Well, I did a lot of testing and google search, and I still have the problem known as the "proximity sensor problem", at lesat on my hand set.
Phone fails to switch itself of so it switches to spearkphone, hangs up or dials another number randomly as you are talking on the phone.
The iPhone really is perfect in most ways except actually using it for calling people, which is very annoying.
I thought the cover or the case was the problem or something else, but I have tried everything and still end up with the problem, evfen with the latest update of the O.S.
I have had reliable reports that this has been fixed in O.S. 4.2 but it is not out for another month or so, so I am curious to see what happens.
I know the iPhone is perfect, or close enough, for most things except calling, but if you cannot have a reliable phone call on a phone, it is useless, then you might as well use an iPod Touch.
Sadly this is the reality at the moment and many blogs, not just blindness specific, agreed with me. Many blind people use head phones or head set, so they do not hdeal with this issue, but I do not want to do that.
Cheers

Well my problem is with ITunes more than the Touch, but I've noticed that sometimes when I add an album to my library to be put on my Touch, sometimes a song gets left off, usually the first track of the album. And yes it's true for both the device itself and ITunes. I've had two albums recently where that's happened and the actual first track gets omitted. And I haven't been able to figure that one out.
Yes I have that damn speakerphone problem to. very very annoying. I simpley turn voiceover off if I want to use the phone, I just wait for it to be on normal phone then turn it off. its the only solution I've found.
Very similar problem with Android hand sets as well. Because there is no reliable way to disengage the touch screen when on a call, placing your face against the screen often results in horrible affects. Most often switching to speaker phone, or muting the call! I was able to find an app for the droid that allows the screen to be locked during a call, but I'd imagine this could be difficult on the iPhone as there isn't a physical KB. Well, on second thought perhaps an app could lock the screen while on a call and then resume with the press and hold of the home button. I'll dig around today and see if such a beast exist!
This is why I keep my phone for calling and my computer for everything else, though admittedly, having a camera with a portable bar code and ocr scanner would be neat. My Motorola Motofone F3 is simple, and even though it's small, and it's buttons are flat, with only a line to separate each row, they're still actual buttons and there's no touch screen to get in the way of calling. The battery life and durability, even under adverse situations (rain, getting dropped etc) are amazing! Plus, it actually speaks certain things. If it would tell me who's calling, let me check the battery status, turn the alarm off (it speaks to set it) and let me switch between vibrator and ring, it would be perfect. The other options are simply a matter of remembering codes rather than entering menus and looking for the item, which some might like and some might hate.
I exchanged my iPhone 4 due to a signal problem and the new one works perfectly although now I have the sensor problem as well. It didn't seem to be as bad in the last handset. I will say that using a moborola h710 BT headset works well. Ending a call haven't had those problems. If you use the home buttone for orientation move up from there and you will fine the end button. iPhones are fantastic and I will never go back to one with a menu system and buttons. It's so easy just to find things.
I'll talke the iPhone with it's inhearent bugs from time to time before i switch ot any other platform again cuz nothing else had worked this well. And the few bugs have simple solutions in my opinion that enhance the usuability of the device. Get a case and get a headset. Throw in a cheap $20 bluetooth keyboard apps like dragon dictate and vlingo and some of the OCR and Bar code scanner and Photo Searchers/ Identifiers that can be used as money Identifiers and i can travel with out needing to bring a laptop for certain things where i would of in the past prior to having a smart phone.
I can! not what to his december, when my friend comes to the us and I buy off him his Iphone 3gs :)!. By, by! mobile speak, I ant looking back. Yes! I asked CF ifthey were going to astablish prtnerships with third party app writers. Probly when hell freezes over, and raleigh and Houston switch places on the map. :) lol
sorry for spelling, partnerships is what I ment
Correction. iOS 4.2 is coming out before November 7 to address a bug with the daylight saving time stuff. So either today or tomorrow.
Ok, now I really can't wait to get mine. And now I'm wondering if that's the expensive Christmas gift my wife was talking about getting me yesterday.
Oh sweet! Hopefully today then. I've gotten my phone to lock while on speaker, and then justplaced it back up to my face, and it was fine. The other thing you can try, if it goes to speaker, hit the speaker button. That'll put it back.
I do not think that the day light savings time issue was really even an issue. When the time changed my iPhone changed the time correctly. I think the issue now from what I've heard is wireless issues.
The daylight savings time was an issue. My Ipod touch had an alarm to wake me up at 6:00 Monday through friday. The time on the Ipod changed saturday night like I expected. the alarm how ever went off at 7:00 monday instead of 6. I knew this might happen because I had read about the issues in Europe so luckly had another alarm set. I don't know if this issue would have continued to be a problem after the first alarm but I deactivated and reactivated the alarm and it worked again.
that's what the issue is, the clock does change, but appointments and alarms don't seem to do so
then wouldn't that be on an application basis and not an apple flaw? Either way, as it stands I think the wireless is still an issue. I'm running 4.2 on my ipad and am enjoying it emensely.
So, been curious: How's the iPad with the new OS?
Can you touch type as in lift the finger off and it's there?
Still, if it were me, I may welll consider the iPad because of the keyboard size. I text slow enough on my thumb keyboard on my phone that the teenage daughter and friends feel the need to ... shall we say, push me a little? I do think the touch screen would be faster even on a touch, with the single finger tap if only that you just slide to the spot if you're near, you don't have to have typed in the wrong character, then backspace out and redo it.
But the iPad screen was amazing as a blind guy. Looking at a full-size page / screen / chart, I always do the translation thing in my head using onventional methods to figure out relationally where things are and I just found the iPad so much faster. Escpecially when looking at a chart or at the web. I didn't know about flick then, so was just doing it like sighted people around me were, which ws of course slow.
Anyway got off track there but curious how the 'pad is working out for you with the new OS?
Apple is the one who wrote the alarm application included on the IPhone and Ipod touch so it's there fault for creating a rather glaring bug that decent testing should have caught.
That's one thing I'll admit I don't have issues with my current phone. It updates the clock automatically for Daylight Savings or even time zone changes and the alarms update with it. Of course I still hate my current phone so can't wait to get an IPhone. Bt it looks like what's going to end up happening is that I'm going to get my own individual plan and get off my mom's, then get my IPhone and then after her contract with Sprint ends my wife's going to join me on AT&T so she can also get an IPhone and we'll have a joint plan, probably a family plan. That way when she goes to the YMCA for her workouts she can just take her workout music mix with her on the phone instead of having to take the IPod. That's probably what I'll end up doing also. I'll take all my music with me on the IPhone but not the audiobooks that I have on my Touch. I'd have to delete them all from the ITunes library but they're easy enough to restore next time I want to sync the Touch.
iOS 4.2 hasn't even been released yet...
I so want an iphone. not sure what is better the 3 or the 4.... but for me to upgrade from phone now through atnt it's going to be for a 32 gig iphone 299 dollars. roar... but i'll get it someday.
why you do you want the 32 gig? and to answer what's better, it's the 4
The 32-gig is what I'm also hoping to get as well. Then I can take my tunes with me even if I forget my IPod. Won't put my Audiobooks on it though, I'll leave that for devices like the IPod and the VR Stream which I do, in fact, still use.
To post back, after having this device a while.
IOS 4.2 came out, officially, last week, and is supposed to fix the proximity sensor bug, or so I understand.
The biggest problem I have, still, is placing and selecting things while in a phone call. Sure enough it works fine with a head set, but I hve never gotten the iPhone to show me the keypad while not using head phones and inside a call (e.g. "press 3 for choice x").
I get stuck on these things unless I use head phones, and I still think the iPhone does poorly on phone calls, everything else has been pretty impressive.
i guess it depends on where u are and coverage in taht area, i haven't really had it drop calls more so than any other phone i have had on at&t myself and i find its a much better experience using the phone with a headset of some ssort anyways .
just got on my IPhone4 on sunday and loving every bit of it.
i have the same problem as B stated with the ending calls. usually, if 2 finger double tap doesn't help, i use the end call button, usually is the first icon above the round button at the very bottom of the screen. if you have some sight, its the end call button is red in colour.
next step for me will be learning how to type using the touch screen. i'm looking in dept of getting a bluetooth key board. any good suggestion from experience?
cheers
To the person who asked about how conner42 got on 4.2 when it hadn't been released out yet, you give your UDID to some one who has developper access, and they can register your ID theirby giving you access to betas of the firmware.
I've noticed that sometimes Voiceover doesn't work right away in a call but that if you give it time it usually will. It's taken me a bit to get used to that, but the only time it's really been difficult is when I've had to call an automated system where I have to press one for English or whatever, and I've noticed that more and more of those these days are giving you the option to say the number of your choice instead. So it's less of a problem than it used to be.
B, not sure if you have figured out ending a call yet??? lol hopefully by now you have. lol! but if you hit the home button first then two finger double tap on the screen it works. i'm lovin my i phone!!
please help!how do you delete meseges in iPhone4? i'm using iOS4.2.1 btw.
sorry, i'am new to this.
Text messages? Voicemails? For text messages you first need to enter the message list then hit Edit. Then you'll see Delete so-and-so and you need to double tap and then it'll ask you to confirm. So double tap the confirm deletion button for that particular conversation and you'll delete the entire conversation. Do this for all the conversations you want to scrap. As for voicemail ou have to be playing the message you want to delete. Once you are the delete button will be brightened. Double tap and then I believe it asks you to confirm as usual.
I love the iphone 4 a lot, in fact I am practically attached to it, lol. The only thing about it that I don't really like is in fact the motion sensor. I think it is really neat that I can't press anything on the touch screen with my face once I put it up to my ear but that's exactly the problem, when I take it away from my face to reactivate the touch screen the speaker phone becomes activated. I hear that is a voiceover thing however and that if you turn off voiceover the speaker problem is eliminated. The one thing i haven't figured out how to do on the iPhone is actually delete contacts. I can add them but can't seem to figure out how to delete them. I love my iPhone 4, but sometimes I wish I had waited a little longer for the 5 since the 5 will support 4g networks and it's suppposed to come out this year as well as at & t's lte network. I've seen my friend navigate on his g2 android phone on TMobile with 4g and the data is extremely fast.
@ BryanP22, thanks for the help man!
I acquired my phone last thursday and so far i'amm loving it.
my only problem is i don't have a credit card to register to install applications.
is there another ways to install apps without registering?
I do not want to jailbreak my phone because it sounds so complicated.
can the apple store install apps for me?
btw, just to clarify I don't want to pirate software.
I only want to install free apps anyway.
Heartbreaker you need to be in the edit mode for the contact you want to delete. At the bottom of the form there is a delete button, although it's notvisible when flicking the screen. You almost have to feel around on the screen for it and sometimes that can be cumbersome. So if you wanted to delete, let's say Joe Schmoe to pick a name at random, you'd click on Joe Schmoe in your contat list, then click the Edit button. Then you'd hav to feel around on the screen (generally starting from thhe bottom right corner of the phone helps a bit), until you hear Delete Contact. Double tap tat and then COnfirm when it asks you.
mmm iphone, got mine for christmas. finally, got the 16 gig. and don't go anywhere without it. dam. also have a bluetooth keyboard, the one from apple. which is nice, cuz you can do stuff on the phone with the keyboard as well. so, just, mmm num.
I rarely go anywhere without mine either. And I bought a car charger so if the battery ever needs to be charged while I'm on the road it can be taken care of.
I just wish I could find Scansoft Karen amng the voices on my IPhone. I don't like either the American or te British voices but since it's the more toerable of te two I'm using the British. But I've heard that some people have Scansoft Karen on their phones since I've heard it on podcasts. I just wih I knew how to either acquire or where to find her on the phone...
Karen is used when you put the phone's voiceover roter to australian english. Go to settings, general, accessibility, voiceover, language roter, and select all the languages you want from the roter to use. Then once in the main screen use the rotate command to cycle through the roters active, when you get to language roter, flick down with one finger till you hear australian english.
Actually what I ended up doing was setting the region format to Australia, then setting the actual language to American English. Instead it switched to Australian, wich was wat I wanted LOL. But I can never seem to get the hang of the actual roter business, hence why I use left and right flicks most of the time when I navigate a menu.
if anyone needs to know how to lock the i phone n portrait so it don't flip between portrait and land, you hit the home key twice, then with two fingers slide back and forth, go to page two and look around there. i can't remember exactly what it says, but it's on the second page. i couldn't figure it out on my i phone 4, cause it's not in settings like it is on my touch. so I called apple. They have awesome teck support. The two guys I talked to were very friendly and helped out a lot!!!!
Bumping up this Topic --
Hmmm, I'll have to try that.
With emails delete is similar: just open the message to be deleted, and at the bottom of the screen about a thifd in from the left or so, you'll find Delete if memory serves me right. Anyway the bottom row is buttons so just drag your finger across till you find it.
Love my iPod Touch, they seem to have done amazing things to oMoby and, with the color ID program, I believe I observed cloud movement last Friday. I can't be positive of course, but the sky color moved from sky blue to several variants of gray: must've been about a 15MPH wind in the upper atmosphere.
That won't impress any of you with some sight, or who used to have sight: it's more what my daughter would call a 'brainiac' exercise but for someone who has an amateur knowledge of physics and meteorology and who has never had sight, I am finding these forms of real-time information entertaining as well as incredibly useful. A word on Color ID: It uses color names I can't find on the Internet and they're hippy acid-sounding names at that, not even your most stylish woman or flamboyant drag queen, two peas in a pod there, could ever come close to concocting such names. However, there's supposed to be a way to get the hex value of the RGB which I'm familiar with as a developer, or HSL which some of you fashion nuts should be familiar with as it's the format used for painters, clothes designers and artsy fartsy fruit loops.
Anyway, being able to in real time identify things makes me feel sometimes like I have limited sight. For those of you with any semblance of real sight, or used to have sight, go ahead and laugh: I deserve that, but I'm continuously amazed.
color ID
@ leo
sir you can change it to speak a regular color.
just hit the unlabel button at the top.
it will say simple colors.
ah, awesome will def have to try that. i also don't like the funky colors it says. lol!
I can't wait to get an iPhone 4 or 5, whichever is around by the time I am eligible for an upgrade. I always have my 3gs on my person, and I panic when I do not LOL. But I can't wait to see the next generation.
You people are unbelievably helpful at times. Man that was amazing. I did have to flick because VoiceOver doesn't like to read when that app is loaded: pretty process-intensive I imagine. But I did find the number button. Here's to hoping that setting will stick.
To the proximity sensor gripes, keep the phone flat against your cheek when you wanna talk on it with the ear piece. Pull it away if you need the screen. Yes, the call gets put on speaker phone automatically if Voiceover is active. There is no way for the call sounds and the voiceover sounds to be routed to two different places. It's supposed to be a feature, not a bug. Also, the double tap to end a call method works fine for me. The trick is, once you pull the phone away from your face to do it, you have to wait about a half a second for the screen to activate, and Voiceover to route to the speaker. Before anybody complains about this, sighted people have to wait for the screen to unfreeze, too. It's just the nature of the beast, and really nothing to get jacked about.
Hmmm.I ever really thought of actually pulling the phone away from my ear. But I did notice that Voiceover was more cooperative in a call when speaker phone was active.
Yes. You have to pull the phone away from your ear to unlock the screen. When the screen unlocks, Voiceover becomes active. If you're trying to shove your finger between your cheek and the glass to make keyboard entries, your results will vary. It's like everything else Apple comes up with. You have to think different. Pull the phone away to use the keyboard. If you think about it, sighted and blind alike have to do this, as a sighted person can't use the screen without seeing what they're touching, and we can't use it without hearing what we touch. This is why so many people are having the problems they're having, I'm sure.
yeah I knew about the screen being functional when you take it away from your face it just sucks because like with banks and stuff when you enter your information you have to take the phone away from your face and then as fast as you can enter the numbers. Kinda annoying. Lol.
Oh, I just use the speaker phone the whole time I am doing that kind of stuff, and if I'm in public and I need to do it, I use headphones.
Exactly. I've taken to doing it that way myself.

This is like salona screen protector, i think...
Have any one of you tried using mophie juice pack air?
If so, is it good?
What is this juice pack?
Matthew
The Mophie Juice Pack is a battery extender and case all in one.
Personally, I bought the Proporta USB Turbo Charger, aabout the size of a pack of cards not quite as thick, but it does up to 2 amps rather than just 500MA. And it comes with adapters to charge about anything. You have to use a cable which probably offends the fashion sense of the Twinkle-toed, as does my durable leather case, but I appreciate its usefulness.
I love my otterbox though, like my phones been through a little bit of bumpy roads and my otterbox has kept it shiny and not a single crack. The case itself is messed up of course but the phone is still in perfect condition. I want to get me a battery pack though, for when I'm on the go especially and I'm using that draining navigon.
I wish it would let you demo Navigon before you buy it. Unless I'm missing something?
no, it doesn't.
That's about what I figured. So I gotta save up for it. At least it's way cheaper than the Trecker Breeze! And as long as it works well with Voiceover who gives a rat's buttcheeks?
did the price go back up? I thought they were selling it for like 10 dollars cheaper due to their upgrade and to compete with garman.
Well I see two prices. One's 49 dollars and he other's 59.
One is probably regional and the other is for the full us. It's worth the price no matter what you pay. i use it and it's simply the best. I also use tomtom but find that navigon is more verbal.
no, one is US and the other is north america. The price went back up then.
Yeah. THe US version seems to be the cheaper one. And I figure that's the one I'd be more likely to need.
I got navigon for $29. You can get it for $29 if you get the program for a specific region of the U.S. such as east coast or central.
Hmmm. I wonder what Idaho would be considered. Pacific Northwest?
well the get around for that is to use headphones in order for privacy and yes, when on speaker phone you can access more controls.
the regions are split up into 4 parts I blieve. West coast, central, south and northeast I think. so you'll probably be in west coast. Personally I just got the whole US since I travel quite a bit.
That's what I'd probably do as well.
I'd like to get Navigon to see how it works, I'd probably be just getting the east coast, since I'm in the northeast.
I have a strange case and belt clip combo made of hard plastic which also doubles as a stand.
It works well and is durable, but it is irritating to slide the phone and stand part out of the belt clip part when ever I want to use it.
Mine does not have voice, so I just use it as an IPod, only with the advantage of 3g.
I really like it, especially touch typing.
It's so simple.
I bluetoothed it up with my braillenote and used it as a braille display, but that seems do defy the purpose of voiceover since vo speaks the text at the same time as the braille display displays it.
I wish I could use my bn's keyboard to input data into the Iphone, now that would be interesting.
Sorry for such a long post, so much, I just love this device.
Matthew
yeah, I love my otterbox case because I could pretty much drop the phone which I have on occasion already and it still i pretty new looking. My cae also came with a belt clip but I rarely use it. Navigan is amazing, the only complaint I have for it is everytime it updates, you have to download the entire app again each time so waiting for like a 2 gig app or however huge of a size it is gets kinda cumbersome. Especially if for whatever reason you have to use your data connection to download it, lol.
My only concern about Navigon is that apparently my address doesn't come up on most GPS units. I found that out when I had to use the local taxi service last week. So it seems to me that planning routes might be tricky.
that's interesting. I have never had to deal with a gps that does that and I've lived in some pretty hard to find places.
If it finds the house or appartment building next to yours, couldn't you make it go there, then go one building over? Just trying to help.
Matthew
I'm not even sure there is a building next to mine.
i learned alot about the iphone early this year. now just need to get rid of photo albums that are on the phone. cuz i can't seem to do it. i'm not talking bout the camra roll cuz i already cleared that out...
My question right now is about the Weather App. Let's say ou're monitoring the weather in several cities. I've got family in several different parts of the US and so I have those cities added in Weather. What I can't figure out is how to switch between them or, at least, how to switch back to the original page since each city appears to be on its own page. I can go to the next page but I have no idea how to swich back to the previous one.
I just got an iPhone and have two questions. First, I have tried several times to set up voicemail but have been unsuccessful each time. It asks for a password and says I'm in the edit field, but when I try typing in a password, it doesn't work. I also tried setting it up by calling my voicemail, but I can't type my password in fast enough at this point. Has anyone else had this problem?
Matthew, how did you get your BrailleNote to pair with the iPhone? I have made several attempts to do this but have not succeeded. I would love to be able to use my Apex as a braille display. I have heard that you can control the iPhone with the BrailleNote keyboard, but of course I haven't gotten the chance to try it out yet.
Bryan.
To switch from city to city you flick with 3 fingers near the bottom of the screen, to the left is next and to the right is previous. Keep your fingers close together and flick closer to the bottom of the screen.
Regarding Navigon: I use both navigon and Tomtom. When I lived in NJ and worked in NY I found navigon to be excellent. When I moved to mn I found that navigon would ask me to turn on streets when I wasn't near the corner. When I kept going it would straighten itself out. I like the fact that navigon is more verbal and tells me things like: in 200 feet turn right at fuz street. Tomtom will say the turn and street but not how far away it is. I do find tomtom a bit more accurat when navigating Saint Paul..
I actually figured out the three-finger flick quite by accident yesterday. Still haven't figured out where the switch is that toggles between ringing and silent mode though.
the switch is on the left hand side near the top if you have the home key facing the bottom. You will see a switch that sort of looks like a USB port.
I can usually do the three-finger flick, but I can't figure out the four-finger flick, and the two-finger scrub to go back only works for me sometimes. I've gotten somewhat better at typing on the iPhone, so I was finally able to set up my voicemail password and greeting by calling my voicemail. I'm still having trouble pairing my BrailleNote with the iPhone, though.
To the previous post, please see the topic on transitioning from the braillenote to the ipad. I've posted there. If my directions are wrong, then please tell me, or send mail to the braillenote mailing list. There are many iphone users on there who can help if need be. It's also not a veryr trafficy list and the members are helpful and informative.
That's what that was? Near the volume buttons? I figured it was the sim card tray so I didn't want to tamper with it.
i'd very suggest listing to the podcasts on the IPhone and ITouch on the blindCoolTech site. yes the ones on the touch aren't exactly phone related but they can help in some ways.
I have all those or, at least, all those that are accessible since part of that site seems to be inaccessible if you try to go too far bac at any rate. And lately that threshhold seems to be getting more and more recent. So as much as I hate to say it I don't see BCT beng around much longer, particularly given how infrequently the site is updated anymore.
